What is the difference between Hosting, Domain, and Website?
Three different elements that are interconnected. Many times there is confusion, which is why it is important to know the difference between them in order to carry out online activities as efficiently as possible.
At the moment when a website is visited, at first glance it may seem that the number of processes being executed is large. In reality, there are only three different interconnected aspects of the site:
- Domain name;
- Hosting;
- The website;
What do we mean by "domain"?
This is an address that visitors enter into the search engine (for example Hostico.ro) or in the address bar. This address communicates to the search engine which hosting server to search for the site's files for the purpose of loading them. The term domain must be purchased and pointed to a web hosting (by setting the nameservers), in order to have a useful purpose. Otherwise, purchasing the domain serves no particular purpose. For example, with the Start package, it is possible to add a maximum of 3 sites/domains, but this does not mean that when purchasing the package, you also receive 3 free domain names. These must be purchased separately. Once pointed (linked) to a hosting, subdomains can be created for that domain, such as forum.domain.ro or blog.domain.ro. The number of subdomains that can be created is unlimited. Domains can be pointed to any hosting, and their management is possible from the control panels.
What do we understand by the term "hosting"?
A hosting represents a subscription for space on a server that is kept online at all times, with the purpose of delivering content even when the user is not accessible. This server may run on a local computer; however, the services would only be active as long as the computer is powered on and there are no fluctuations in network operation. In addition to processing speed and high uptime, hosting includes storage space where entire websites or different individual files can be uploaded, which are displayed to visitors when accessing the domain. It is possible to change the files on the hosting plan to display different websites, or different domains can be directed to the hosting to show websites stored for this purpose.
What does "website" represent?
The website is a collection of files (possibly also databases) that are presented to the user when they visit a domain related to hosting. Depending on the configuration of the website and its requirements (in terms of space, resource consumption), one or more hosting packages will be suited to it.
